PDFsharp allows you to open and parse existing PDF files. You can do this for two reasons:
- Open an existing document for modification.
- Open an existing document for importing one or more of its pages and add them to another document.
- Open an existing document for importing the content of one of its pages and draw its content like an image on a page of another document.

Special behavior
PDFsharp does not preserve the object numbers of the original files.
Although PDF is a very well-specified format, some creator application create PDF files that do not comply with these specifications in every detail. PDFsharp nevertheless tries to read such documents. Here is a (incomplete) list of modifications PDFsharp makes to a document.
- If more than one object with the same ID exists, the latest (highest offset in file) one is used.
- If a document contains cross reference streams, all objects in such streams are converted into top level objects. When you save such a document again, it may be much larger than the original document.
